Email is a critical part of your communication strategy with fans. Email messages should be clear, simple and concise. Email should be written and designed for scanability and to get past junk-folder filters and into the recipients in-box. Finally, emails should be designed to catch your recipients' eyes and encourage them to take an action and engage with you, whether that's on your web site, in your social media communities, or in your place of business such as retail locations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your email strategy should take into consideration your target audience, your objectives, and email best practices. Emails should answer the following questions in less than 8 seconds:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. What are you offering?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Why does the recipient care?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. How do they get it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then there's the question of how do you actually get these messages to the in-boxes of your email list recipients. type='text'>PR Nightmares Courtesy of Social Media - Why Monitoring is a Must</title><content type='html'>&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;By now, you’ve probably heard about several PR nightmares that were made possible by the power of social media. If you haven’t, allow me to recap a few examples for you involving YouTube and Twitter: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;1.    United Airlines&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Dave Carroll’s guitar got smashed. Dave is an up and coming musician and on a United Airlines flight his $3,000 guitar was totally destroyed by the baggage handlers. He arrived in his destination city to play a gig only to find his guitar blown to smithereens. After weeks of trying to get United Airlines to reimburse him for his guitar to no avail, he wrote a little ditty about his horrific experience with United Airlines, shot a video with his band, and posted in on You Tube. For months, if you did a Google search for “United Airlines” you would find his video, “United Breaks Guitars”, on the first page of the SERP. When I last checked, the video had over 7.8 million views. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2.    Domino’s Pizza&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;It took 30 years to build this brand and about 10 seconds to destroy it on You Tube. Some young employees at Domino’s shot a video of what they supposedly do to your pizza before you get it. Let’s just say, you would lose your appetite immediately if I told you what it was they were doing to the pizza. The video was ultimately taken offline but Domino’s was slow to respond because they did not have any social media presence. Although the video was taken down, the story lives on because when you search for Domino’s, news outlets that covered the Domino’s disaster still appear in the search results. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3.    Southwest Airlines&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;In more recent news, Southwest had a large size passenger issue. Kevin Smith, a popular movie director, was removed from a flight for taking up more than one seat. He immediately started to Tweet about it and bash Southwest. It turns out that his negative Tweets about Southwest may have been self-serving to promote one of his upcoming movies but the fact remains that Southwest took a beating from him for several days online. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;So, how does a company protect themselves from this kind of negative PR when social media sites provide instant access to a multi-million person audience? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;United Airlines and Domino’s struggled with addressing their social media woes. United was very slow to respond and when they ultimately did respond, their response got far less fan fare than Dave’s video did…probably because they didn’t respond in-kind. A smart response would have been to craft their own witty video response and publish it on YouTube as well as on their own site. This likely would have generated millions of views and worked better to spread their response which was to ultimately offer to pay for Dave’s guitar. Dave turned down the payment and instead had them donate the money to charity. United has since incorporated this video into their standard training for all employees which shows me they at least understand how important customer service is to their company and what one unsatisfied customer can do to them in social media. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Domino’s didn’t fare much better. They didn’t have ANY social media presence when their YouTube video broke so they had to quickly establish a Twitter accountant and start responding to the thousands of negative Tweets about them. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Southwest probably handled their situation the best of the three examples listed here. They have a very active social media department and routinely use it to address social media issues. They became aware of Kevin’s issue within an hour and immediately they responded to him publicly, personally and to many of the other Southwest followers who were Tweeting about it. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;The questions to ask yourself are: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;1.    Is my organization monitoring social media chatter about my product or service? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;2.    Are we ready to respond? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;3.    Do we know how to respond? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;No matter what industry you’re in, the social media gorillas are Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Beyond that, there are review sites for just about every industry today. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Here are 2 easy and free ways you can monitor chatter about your company today: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;1.    Set up free &lt;a href="http://www.google.com/alerts"&gt;Google Alerts&lt;/a&gt;. Simply Google which topics interest you and you’ll get an alert every time these topics are mentioned. For example, Southwest could set up Google Alerts for search queries such as: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;a.    Southwest sucks&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;b.    Southwest sux&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;c.    Southwest tickets&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;d.    Southwest seats&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;And so on. You can set the Alerts to come to you 1 time daily or every time a search result is available with your search query in it. Doing the latter will ensure you’re timely in your response to any negative chatter about your company. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;2. During these tough times, remember that interactive marketing is measurable, effective, and is inexpensive relative to other forms of media and has a lower barrier to entry.  It will take careful planning and monitoring of your investments but if done correctly, these tactics could prove very fruitful.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Here are 5 areas to focus your marketing during these tough economic times that could have you saying “bad economy, what are you talking about?” in no time!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;1. First and foremost, &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;get back to fundamentals&lt;/span&gt;. Look at what has traditionally worked for your business on the web and shore up those programs. For example, if database marketing has been a mainstay of your marketing program, bolster it with stronger messaging, meatier content and offers, and test new mailing schedules to small segments of your database to see where you might be able to drive incremental revenue.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Keep your message on target&lt;/span&gt;. Remember that it’s not about the technology; it’s about the people. The technology is just a means to an end of communicating with people. You probably don’t need a new app or widget to be successful on the web. Take a step back and ask yourself what your message is and how you can maximize its delivery via the web. Consider how it ties into your overall marketing strategy and how it will help you achieve your short-term and long-term goals.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Learn how to harness the power of new interactive channels such as social media. &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Social media &lt;/span&gt;is a relatively inexpensive way to reach out to customers and stay in contact with them, without many of the worries of maintaining a strong email database. Don’t forgo your email marketing, but consider that while email addresses change, people lose jobs and you can’t reach them at their former email address and the like; social networks provide a way for you to talk to them, regardless.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Are you taking donations online or selling products online? &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Focus on the donation/shop and buy areas of your site.&lt;/span&gt; Your donation/sales funnel may seem like it should be a “set it and forget it” portion of your site but quite the opposite is true. Utilize your web metrics tools to better understand where people are falling off in the process and see how you can keep them engaged through checkout and implement a recontact strategy for those who bail before completion.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. The opportunity for &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;non-profits and for-profit organizations to partner&lt;/span&gt; has never been greater! It drives consumer behavior. The SALT group released its "Trends in Branding 2009" report recently and said that when consumers are "faced with two branded options, the one that offers them the opportunity to support their community or a good cause will increasingly win." Companies singled out by SALT include Target, with its "Do 5% Good" campaign, eBay's World of Good, and Project RED, which has partnered together with such brands as Apple, American Express, Starbucks, Gap, Microsoft and Hallmark. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Selling it all to your boss a challenge? Take a stand for what you believe is right for your company to do but then support that with hard facts. Look to possible internal and external benchmarks for data to support your ideas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Note: I will be speaking at the FDMA event on Thursday, March 19th. Lauderdale at the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas. It was the organization's first ever open forum, peer-to-peer event where attendees were able to ask questions of the board and other subject matter experts around the room. While unsure whether this format would be a success, it was well-received and undoubtedly the biggest issue on everyone's mind was social media.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Business owners, marketing VPs, directors, and managers all looked like deer in headlights as questions about Twitter, Tweeting, Facebook and MySpace advertising and more were discussed at length. Summarizing and paraphrasing, it seemed that the biggest concerns raised were: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"  &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;ol  style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;What is social media? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;What is Twitter?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;What is Twitter etiquette?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;How can I use Facebook for business?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;What networks should I be on?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Everyone seemed to be looking for that one simple answer to the question: what can social media do for me and how can it be done? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Just like search, print, TV or any other marketing channel, your social media marketing plan should tie back to your overall corporate strategies. For example, if your goal is lead generation, you will have a very different social media markeitng plan than if your goal is one of brand extension. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Someone raised the example of how Dell computers is using Twitter. Last year they sold over $1 million worth of refurbished machines via Twitter. They have a Twitter account with a very specific goal and message of selling refurbished machines. The Green Peace charity has the goal of raising awareness of their organization and increasing donations. These messaging strategies are very different. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Start by asking yourself,  what do you want social media to do for you? Why do you want to engage in social media marketing activities? If you can't answer those 2 questions for your business, you shouldn't be in social media.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;Once you answer those questions, your strategy should naturally shake out from there. And I offered this advice last night: creating your social media strategy, planning and initial implementaiton should take time. There should be careful consideration to which social media vehicles are right for your business, what your messaging should be like, the frequency of messaging, how to acquire a following/friend base, etc. But once that detailed strategy, planning and implementation are done, the ongoing maintenance of your social media marketing plan should be fairly simple. Even the Fed seems desperate by cutting their lead interest rate to 0% today...an unprecedented and historic move. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;And not surprisingly, web traffic reflects the attitudes of many Americans who are frantically checking their pockets hoping to find cash instead of old lint balls.
